The Great Rebalancing

The Great Rebalancing

Develop your future scenario

In the New Equilibrium scenario, cities change. However, competing drivers of change have prevented complete transformation. The result is a balanced, mixed-result, yet looks significantly different from continuing on our current trajectory.

Some cities reach, earnestly, for change, attempting to rebalance old systems rather than dig them all up and begin from scratch. Here reform has been the name of the game. Public life is a negotiation between efficiency and equity. There’s a surge in experimental modes of governance, from mutual aid neighbourhoods mainstreaming communal living, to participatory budgeting allowing communities to decide what matters to them. But not everyone benefits, and while wealthier neighbourhoods shelter from climate ‘Red Zone’ heat days in micro-grid powered communal shelters, the rest of the city sweats through rolling blackouts.

Technological progress marched forward, but under watchful eyes. Most people feel a sense of responsibility towards one another - if you don’t feel the call of duty naturally, apps like CivicScore help, algorithmically offer perks for civic acts. The result works, but raises questions about dignity, access, and autonomy. A last ditch attempt at large-scale investment in carbon removal tech signals ambition, but also desperation. This timeline is trying to correct its course, but is defined by trade-offs: innovation without full trust, and equity efforts without full reach.
